Aims of the course

The main aim of the course is to prepare teachers to teach Young Learners. General guidelines

The course consists of:

Input sessions:

20 sessions of approximately one and a half hours each, amounting to 30 hours of input time. These sessions are run in a full-time mode over a period of 10 consecutive days or in a pert-time mode over a period of 10 weeks

Teaching Practice:

Each participant will be observed teaching Young Learners classes by the tutor for a minimum of 3 hours. These classes will be special Teaching Practice classes created for the course by the Teacher Training Centre.
For every lesson that the trainee teaches, there will be pre-lesson guidance and post-lesson feedback.

Age groups:

Input sessions cover the complete range of young learners (from 3 year olds to teenagers). The practice component of the course will concentrate on 8 year olds to 15 year olds.

Observation of

Each participant will observe experienced teachers of Young Learners teaching for a minimum of 4 hours. For each of the hours of observation, participants must complete an assigned observation task. Trainees can observe live and videoed lessons.

Tutorials:

Each participant will be given a minimum of two tutorials of approximately 30 minutes each — these will involve the discussion of observation tasks and trainees' general progression up that point of the course.

Written work:

Each participant will need to complete two written assignments. These will be set and submitted during the course. A third optional assignment will be set during the course for those who want to widen the range of ages endorsed on their certificates. This assignment can be submitted up to a year from completion of the course. In addition, there may be homework tasks set after some input sessions.
