Teaching at BKC

The MBA & IELTS Centre

The MBA and IELT Centre offers short preparation courses for IELTS, TOEFL, GMAT and GRE. We offer separate IELTS courses for Academic and General Training Modules, and separate IELTS and TOEFL courses for Intermediate (IELTS/TOEFL Extended 4 months) and Upper-Intermediate/Advanced (2 months) level students.

Students study in The MBA and IELTS Centre for a variety of reasons; to emigrate, work abroad, study abroad or obtain an English certificate for an international company.

Course book and Materials

The standard course books we use for teaching MBA classes are:

  • IELTS 2 months: Insight into IELTS
  • IELTS 4 months: Focus on IELTS
  • TOEFL: Delta's Key to the Next Generation TOEFL
  • GMAT: Barron's GMAT
  • GRE: Barron's GRE

The MBA and IELTS Centre has excellent recourses: supplementary material, practice and specimen tests, and printed articles.

Teaching in the MBA and IELTS Centre

Teaching in The MBA and IELTS Centre offers many rewards:

  • Russian students have a clear aim; they are highly-motivated and determined, making them a pleasure to teach.
  • The groups are carefully formed. Students undertake a specifically designed entrance test and are placed, according to this test, in a suitable group.
  • Teaching International Exams (IELTS, TOEFL, GMAT, and GRE) makes one more marketable in the future; looks good on the CV and the experience and development gained is invaluable.
  • MBA Centre classes require a lot of planning, preparation and marking. However, teachers receive a higher rate of pay for MBA classes and receive educational support and help from the ADOS. Once one has gained experience of MBA classes, one finds the planning and preparation is reduced to an extent.

Teacher Support

Every teacher working in The MBA Centre receives the full support and guidance of The MBA Centre ADOS. Furthermore, we also have a friendly team of managers who are willing to help.

The MBA Centre also runs regular workshops aimed at teacher development. In addition, the monthly BKC seminars nearly always contain an exam related topic. Given the challenging nature of teaching such classes, attendance is strongly advised.

The IELTS Centre

In 2005, BKC-IH became an IELTS Test Centre. BKC teachers, who fulfill the requirements, have the opportunity to become an IELTS Examiner. Teachers should have:

  • An undergraduate degree or a qualification which can be demonstrated to be equivalent to an undergraduate degree.
  • A recognized qualification in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).
  • At least 3 years full time (or the equivalent part time) relevant TESOL teaching experience (post certificate level qualification).
  • The required professional attributes and interpersonal skills.

The training is conducted over 2 consecutive days and is free of charge.

Teaching in The MBA Centre

The main difference between teaching in The MBA Centre as distinct from teaching general evening classes, say, or young learners, lies in the students' motivation, which can be intense, as, for instance, where entry to a foreign university, or emigration to a foreign country, depends on the grade obtained. A second difference is that the syllabus is very much dictated by the particular requirements of the examination concerned. In other words, you don't have to work on arousing, or retaining, the students' interest; that is already there. But you do have to make them feel that they understand the specific demands of the examination, and are competent to meet them. They also want a sense of progress, and of regular assessment by the teacher to assure them that they are on the way to the grade they need.

Teachers need to study the requirements of the examination (and these can vary widely, from the relatively relaxed world of IELTS, to the pedantic rigours of such American examinations as TOEFL, GMAT and GRE, the last two of which are designed primarily for native speakers), and, where necessary, need to forget the principles in which you have been trained: the Communicative Method is not going to be of much help, for instance, if correcting a grammatical error (in GMAT) depends on noticing that the punctuation-mark in the middle of a sentence is in fact a semi-colon, not a comma.

If you want to teach in the MBA Centre, the first step is to attend the MBA Centre workshops held in the MBA Centre. Also, feel free to come to the Centre and consult with the MBA Centre ADOS.
